About Ölz

Ölz is a family business with a long tradition in the baking trade. From its humble beginnings in 1938 in Vorarlberg, Austria, the company has developed into a respected player in the European bakery industry thanks to a combination of experience and continual innovation. Approaching a century since the company’s birth, Ölz’s unique recipes and unmistakable flavours continue to delight customers to this day.

Initial situation

Ölz’s EDI migration story begins in 2018, when the decision was made to replace the existing EDI converter with an future-proof, state-of-the-art solution due to the high complexity of Ölz’s EDI infrastructure. With Ölz’s previous solution, setting up and managing numerous point-to-point connections with individual customers involved a great deal of effort. In combination with a small internal EDI team, the work was barely manageable. The goal was therefore to completely rethink EDI and set it up with a partner in such a way that it would function smoothly in the long term, be scalable and capable of development.

The main goals for the new solution

  • Simplification of the EDI infrastructure
  • Quick and uncomplicated onboarding of new customers
  • Safeguarding of resources (as there was only one internal expert)
  • Hassle-free handling of high message volumes and large messages
  • Efficient transmission of time-critical EDI messages (ORDERS, DESADV)
  • Market knowledge and competent cooperation with customers

Why did Ölz choose ecosio?

There were two key reasons Ölz opted for ecosio. Firstly, Ölz was particularly attracted by ecosio’s fully managed “EDI as a Service” approach. From infrastructure set-up and customer onboarding to long-term monitoring and technical support, ecosio’s solution covered all EDI services. Secondly, ecosio had a clear vision of setting up a new and more efficient infrastructure via a single interface from Ölz’s ERP system. Thirdly, the ecosio team was able to talk to the often large EDI teams of Ölz’s customers at a very high technical level. Naturally, a single in-house expert could not do this to the same extent.

The collaboration

Once the decision had been made, the collaboration began under the leadership of an ecosio project manager, who ensured that key steps were implemented quickly and effectively. Unplanned events, such as an internal personnel change at Ölz, didn’t disrupt the project in any way due to the competent project implementation. The following points were also very positive:

  • Rapid knowledge transfer via telephone when problems arose
  • Highly professional project management
  • Flexibility of the project manager
  • Proactiveness of ecosio’s technical experts
  • High level of mapping expertise
  • Excellent cooperation on a human level
  • State-of-the-art monitor

Cooperation with customers

Claus Faymonville, IT architect and responsible for EDI at Ölz, says: “In addition to our high-quality Ölz products, the fast and smooth exchange of order and delivery information with our customers is of crucial importance. In ecosio, we have found a partner that fulfils this responsibility and enables us to establish EDI as the primary communication medium with all our customers.

The initial problems with the previous software have thus been overcome and EDI has gone from pain to gain at Ölz. We at ecosio are looking forward to many more years of masterful collaboration with master bakers!
