According to the principle of “we’re connecting Europe”, ecosio has established a connection to the PEPPOL network, thus rendering ecosio a PEPPOL access point provider. All ecosio clients are now automatically PEPPOL enabled and can exchange electronic messages on the PEPPOL network with authorities, public institutions and any company anywhere in Europe.

The Pan-European Public Procurement Online (PEPPOL) Initiative was created by the European Union in order to simplify and unify the communication between suppliers and contracting authorities within e-Procurement.

The Background of PEPPOL

With public authorities being the largest customers in the EU, the EU saw a need to launch PEPPOL. It is estimated that the buying volume of public procurement represents 16% of the gross national product of the whole EU, approximately 1.500 billion euros. As a matter of fact, the scope and capabilities of the public procurement to carry out integrated and fully electronic processes such as orders, invoices or catalogues were very little developed in comparison to private businesses. Therefore, in 2008 the EU initiated the PEPPOL project; in order to offer an appropriate infrastructure of unified processes and formats to the public procurement in all Europe.

PEPPOL and the ecosio infrastructure

Thanks to the connection to PEPPOL, ecosio clients can exchange PEPPOL compliant orders, invoices etc. with public authorities and private businesses everywhere in Europe. PEPPOL is a very important step towards e-invoicing for public procurement as it reduces errors due to manual interaction and constant data management and speeds up the invoice creation process. As a result this allows the same benefits for G2B (Government to Business) that are currently available for B2B (Business to Business) to be achieved. Moreover, more and more big concerns choose PEPPOL as an alternative to the current EDI processes.

We will have a deeper look into the technical components and details of PEPPOL in further posts, as well as data format and transmission protocols. Especially the transmission of messages within the PEPPOL network will show in the future interesting innovations.
